Firstly, what is Urban Sybiosis?
The basics of Urban Sybiosis is taking waste materials from one stream and utilising it in another. Using local waste materials saves waste from going into landfill, saves having to move the material around in big polluting diesel trucks, saves money and reduces the need for producing new materials, further reducing the CO2 footprint!

So you use other peoples rubbish?
In a nutshell, yes!
From tastymicros to more tasty produce!

These are micro greens, delicious and nutritious microgreens, grown sustainably in London by tastymicros. Nutrient rich and fast growing, microgreens can be grown in very small urban farms, stacked vertically on shelves, or even at home on your window sill. The shoots are harvested for use in salads etc. Once the young shoots are harvested the plants get a bit tough so that’s where we come in and compost them! TastyMicros deliver the finished growing medium and seed to us every few weeks.
Green Manure

Since the peas are already growing, it seems a waste to then compost them straight away, so we simply keep them growing on in trays and then use the growth as a green manure. Green manure is a crop grown purely to be incorporated into the soil as a fertiliser, whilst it is still green, it doesn’t need to be broken down into compost first.
Peas are also nitrogen fixing, so they take up nitrogen from the air and also carbon from the atmosphere. This reduces the need for fertilisers and helps us grow tasty food too! Green manures are grown as a cover crop, this helps to protect bare soils, helping to lock in moisture, reducing nutrient leaching and provides habitat for soil life, mycelium, detritovores and micro-organisms!
