Introduction
We have a good sized polytunnel on site, approximately 14 x 24 feet. The polytunnel supplied by First Tunnels is ideal for growing salad leaves out of season and crops such as tomatoes, aubergines and chilies. We are using self watering containers for growing tomatoes, to help reduce irrigation requirements. These containers have given an excellent crop, the extra warmth in the tunnel helps produce tomatoes right up until November.

Our polytunnel also provides a little bit of undercover weather protection for our volunteers when they are gardening! The beds in our polytunnel are available for our volunteers to use. We utilise the produce grown on site for communal meals. We prepare salads and soups and share these with our volunteers and visitors.

Benefits of Polytunnel growing
Polytunnels, also known as hoop houses, offer several benefits for gardeners and grower. Here are some key advantages:
- Extended Growing Season: Polytunnels help extend the growing season by providing a warmer, protected environment. Plants can be started earlier in spring and harvested later in the autumn.
- Protection from Weather: Polytunnels protect crops from wind, heavy rain, and hailstones. This makes it easier to grow delicate plants that might otherwise be damaged if grown outdoors.
- Improved Plant Growth: The controlled environment inside a polytunnel can lead to better growth. The warmer temperature, humidity, extended growing season and protection can result in healthier plants and bigger yields.
- Increased Yield: You can grow a wider variety of plants, including those that may not thrive if grown in the open, especially crops like tomatoes and aubergines.
- Pest and Disease Control: Polytunnels create a barrier that can reduce the risk of pest and disease infestation. The enclosed environment can limit the entry of harmful insects. It also prevents the spread of fungal or bacterial diseases such as tomato blight.
- Water Efficiency: Polytunnels help conserve water by reducing evaporation and allowing for more efficient irrigation.
- Cost-Effective: Polytunnels are much less expensive to build than greenhouses.
