Big Garden Birdwatch
The Big Garden Birdwatch 2025 is an annual event organized by the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds). It invites people to spend one hour counting the birds that visit their gardens. They can also count them in local green spaces (Meadow Orchard Project). Participants then submit their results, helping the RSPB monitor bird populations and understand trends in birdlife.

Date 24th – 26th Jan ’25
The Big Garden Birdwatch takes place every year, over one weekend in January. For 2025, the event will be from January 24th to January 26th.
How to Participate
- Choose a spot to watch birds in your garden or a nearby park.
- Spend one hour counting the different bird species you see. You don’t need to count individual birds of the same species, just the number of species you see.
- Record your observations and then submit your results online to the RSPB.
Why Participate?
- It helps scientists track bird populations.
- It raises awareness about bird conservation.
- Itβs a fun and educational activity for all ages.
Tips for Success
- Have a good bird identification guide or app on hand.
- Make sure you have some bird food (like seeds or suet) available to attract birds.
- Be patient and keep an eye out for less common species that may visit.
Results and Impact
The data collected helps inform conservation strategies and trends in bird species across the UK. Previous years have shown shifts in bird populations, such as increases in certain species like wood pigeons, and declines in others like sparrows.
Itβs a fantastic way to connect with nature while helping a great cause! If you’re in the UK or have a garden or outdoor space to observe, this event is a great way to contribute.
