Off-Grid Kitchen: Solutions for Outdoor Cooking

  1. Our new gas hob
  2. Using the stove
  3. Outdoor sink
  4. A canopy for our kitchen

Our new gas hob

We’ve added a little two burner gas hob to our outdoor kitchen. It has a neat little cover made from reclaimed hardwood that hinges up and out of the way, to keep it dry and free from leaves. It uses a 15kg Butane Calor gas bottle so is more economical than our previous little portable campingaz stove.

We also have an assortment of wood burning stoves, kelly kettles and rocket stoves, but for convenience the hob is great for boiling a kettle or a pan of pasta quickly!

Using the stove

If you would like to use the stove, please ask one of our site leaders and they can show you how to connect the gas cylinder and light the stove.

Outdoor sink

Our volunteers are a thrifty group. They are always on the lookout for materials that can be reclaimed and reused for our Permaculture project! In 2024, our volunteers sourced a nice stainless steel sink. This sink is used as a veg/hand wash station in our kitchen garden. Along with the sink, some rather nice reclaimed hardwood tongue and groove timber was salvaged!

A canopy for our kitchen

The ever resourceful volunteers have been working hard over the winter. Our outdoor kitchen now has a little canopy over the top. It is made from twinwall polycarbonate roofing (reclaimed of course). This helps keep the leaves and rain off the worktop. We’ve also disguised the side of our functional but ugly metal shed with a lovely habitat wall for nesting bees. The bees will appreciate the new canopy too!

Since Meadow Orchard is off-grid with no mains water, water for handwashing needs to be brought in from off site. A number of salvaged 25-litre containers are used for this purpose. A little hardwood platform was made to position the tap over the sink. Waste water is naturally used for watering plants. Eco detergent and hand wash is used, along with compostable sponges to minimise the likelihood of micro plastic pollution.
