Reusing materials

There are so many ways you can help contribute to Meadow Orchard Project. One super easy way is to save materials which can be reused in the garden.

Cardboard toilet roll tubes and kitchen roll tubes make great flowerpots or root trainers for potting on seedlings and germinating broad beans. Brown corrugated cardboard, brown paper, newspaper and cardboard amazon packaging can be used for sheet mulching to supress weeds from paths and beds. Cardboard can be left on top of the compost bays to the rear of the site (it’s fine to leave it outside in the rain).

Cardboard egg boxes make brilliant trays for ‘chitting’ potatoes (placing them in the light so that the eyes sprout before planting). Seedtrays and flowerpots are always needed and we use hundreds each year. Especially the smaller ones 75 – 90mm (3 – 3 1/2″) are perfect for potting on and using for plant sales to help raise funds for our garden.

Eggshells

Eggshells placed around young plants make a reasonable slug defence when first planting out. Birds such as bluetits will also eat the shells as a source of calcium during the breeding season.

Community Composting

More sources of compost are always welcome at Meadow Orchard. Food waste, Veg scraps can all be composted. Some of our volunteers bag up veg peelings, pop it in the freezer and then drop it off in one of our green food caddys (left by the side of our gate during the spring and summer) or added to one of our compost bins.
