The Soothing Power of Mint

Propagating Mint by Stem Cuttings

Propagating mint cuttings in water

Mint plants reproduce asexually through stem cuttings, a simple and effective method. Here’s how you can propagate mint using stem cuttings:

  1. Select a Healthy Stem
    • Choose a fresh, non-flowering stem (10 -15cm long) from a healthy mint plant.
  2. Cut the Stem
    • Using sharp scissors or a sharp knife, cut just below a node (the point where leaves emerge).
  3. Remove Lower Leaves
    • Strip the lower leaves from the bottom 2 inches of the cutting to prevent rotting in the water or soil.
  4. Rooting in Water
    • Place the cutting in a glass of water, ensuring the node is submerged.
    • Keep in indirect sunlight and change the water every 2 days.
    • Roots should appear in 7-14 days.
  5. Planting in Soil
    • Insert the stem about %cm deep into moist compost.
    • Keep the compost moist and place the pot in a warm, bright location.
  6. Care and Growth
    • In 2-3 weeks, roots will establish.
    • Once the plant is growing well, transfer it to a garden bed or container.

Advantages of Stem Cutting Propagation

  • Fast and easy method
  • Produces genetically identical plants
  • No need for seeds
