Do good and keep fit

2025 is off to a great start at MOP, we’re welcoming our friends from Goodgym Harringay to Meadow Orchard again this month. We’ll be barrowing woodchip to mulch paths and collecting xmas trees to use for composting on site and as wood for hugel beds.

A Big thankyou to our volunteers for contacting their neighbours and community WhatsApp groups to help generate interest in collecting and reusing trees too.

Goodgym Review

Goodgym Haringey upload a review of their volunteering activities, they are a good guide to the kind of tasks you’ll be getting up to as a member and an entertaining read too!

About GoodGym Haringey

If you are not familiar with the concept of Goodgym, Goodgym are a group of volunteers who meet on Wednesdays to help out with community activities and errands.

The good gym-ers often meetup at bluehouse yard and run to the activity. This is optional abd if you’re not quite up to that volunteers can also meet onsite too.

Tasks can be helping community groups with gardening activities or something as small as helping an elderly neighbour with some shopping. It’s a really friendly group, a great mix of volunteers a really a lovely community.

On their last visit to MOP

We had something suitably taxing to give our volunteers a bit of a workout! On their last vist we went with some wood reclamation as an activity, breaking pallets with pallet breakers to reuse timber to create some fab new signage around the site.

We have a lot of old pallet wood around the site from old compost bins, a pallet bughouse that were a bit too far gone, rather than disposing of those, we decided to break them up, saw into manageable lengths and then dry as a resource to produce biochar (a valuable soil amendment) from.

As is the case with goodgym at MOP at somepoint there’s always wheelbarrows involved and 250kg of brewers waste was swiftly wheeled to the compost bays!

Nine volunteers, some great banter, three pallet breakers, two claw-hammers, a club hammer, a couple of wheelbarrows, a good bit of graft and a few cups of tea soon made short work of the task in hand.

A few of the goodgym-ers enjoyed a torch-lit site tour, a visit to the cob house and also entertained us with some impromptu guitar on our little 3/4 size cobhouse guitar!
