Community collaboration

This January, we’re excited to join in a community effort. Beginning on the 8th January, we’ll don our high-viz jackets, grab the loppers, wheelbarrows, and tough gloves, hitting the streets to collect xmas trees! We’ll be joined by Goodgym Haringey this year, they love a good work out, so the more trees the better!

Our goal is to collect as many xmas trees as we can for composting on site in our community garden! Christmas trees also make excellent dead hedges, habitat and are great for den building for kids of all ages. We have a great local community and Park Road North in particular really came up trumps, supplying the majority of the trees. We’ve sent word out via our mailing list. We’re eager to see how many more of our neighbours will donate trees this year.

Xmas Tree Drop off

If you live nearby to Meadow Orchard you are welcome to drop off your tree too! Simply bring the tree on Saturday’s or Wednesday’s between 12.00 – 4.00 pm, when we and one of our volunteers will help add it to our pile. Outside of these hours, please leave your tree to the left of our gate, keeping the path clear. Alternatively please use the link below to send us a message and we’ll try to add you to our schedule!

Donations

If we collect your tree, we’d happily accept a donation (Suggested Donation £5). This will help sustain the project and our gardening activities through the year.

The Great Meadow Orchard Xmas Tree Hunt I

Last year Meadow Orchard volunteers collected Xmas trees from local houses to use to compost on site. The trees were first de-limbed (removing all of the branches from the main trunks), the branches were laid down over the paths to aid drainage and reduce soil compaction from the ongoing foot-traffic. The trunks were laid top to toe in a number of the newly created semi raised beds.

Since Meadow Orchard has very little topsoil (from it’s prior use as tennis courts until as recently as the 1990’s) and is on London Clay, we trialled building hügelbeds as a method of helping to both retain rainwater and also help with drainage. The yield from the hügel beds was around five times the beds which hadn’t been prepared as hugels.
